The Canadian Association of Mould Makers (CAMM) is tackling one of the industry’s toughest challenges: the skilled labor shortage. Its new initiative, CAMM TechBridge, launched in August 2025, is using innovation and education to attract and prepare the next generation of moldmakers.

At the heart of CAMM TechBridge is virtual reality training. Inspired by conversations with her kids about video games, CAMM Executive Director Nicole Vlanich realized VR could provide a safe, engaging way to introduce students to manufacturing. The program now features interactive simulations that let youth experience “a day in the life of a moldmaker,” along with bite-sized training modules on CNC milling, CNC lathes and foundational skills. This gives apprentices familiarity with equipment before they ever step on a shop floor—saving employers time and resources.

Equally important, CAMM TechBridge addresses common misconceptions about skilled trades. “You earn while you learn,” Vlanich emphasizes, reminding parents and students that moldmaking offers high-paying, debt-free career paths built on creativity and problem-solving. By partnering with schools, guidance counselors and employers, the program creates what Vlanich calls a pipeline of connection.” Students, parents, teachers and industry leaders all gain access to resources and experiences that make manufacturing careers tangible and appealing.

The initiative also works to reduce barriers. From financial supports like wage subsidies and childcare assistance to pushing for moldmaking’s recognition as a Red Seal trade, CAMM is intent on making career entry easier. Vlanich’s vision for the next five years is clear: a vibrant Manufacturing Month full of school visits, shop tours and a robust suite of VR training programs.

With CAMM TechBridge , CAMM is proving that combining passion, technology and collaboration can help secure moldmaking’s future—one student, parent and employer at a time.
