MMT Chats: Applying Bench Lessons to the Business of Moldmaking
In this 30-minute conversation, Mark Gauvain shares his take on the changing role of the mold builder over his career, some global manufacturing strategies, trends in medical device packaging, consumer packaging, and food and beverage industries, as well as new busines opportunities for mold builders in emerging technologies such as 5G, IoT, autonomous vehicles, AR/VR and consumer robotics.
Here are just a few quick tidbits to whet your appetite:
- Small and mid-sized companies should not be afraid of partnering with other companies that have a specialty or even offshore manufacturer.
- Look into specialization such as liquid silicon rubber molds.
- Look at nontraditional opportunities. Think outside of the normal and look at today's high-tech companies and seeing the correlation to what you can do for them. For example, e-commerce companies and their robots.
- Mold builders must learn to pivot to take advantage of the changes taking place across different end markets that may present new business opportunities like the electrification of automobiles, miniaturization, in-mold assembly, etc.
