Shop Talk: Mishaps, Memories and Moldmaking
Where moldmaking stories become industrial folklore.

In moldmaking, some of the most valuable lessons don't come from textbooks or training manuals — they come from those unforgettable moments when plans collide with reality. That’s why we're thrilled to introduce “SHOP TALK,” a new column brought to you by Canon Virginia that celebrates the human side of our industry.
Every shop floor veteran has that story: the apprentice mistake that became legendary, the creative fix that backfired big time or the machine mishap that still makes the team laugh years later. These stories aren’t just entertaining — they're the shared experiences that unite this community and remind everyone that behind every precision mold is a very human journey.
Our first story on page 47 features a process technician’s encounter with a stubborn mold, brass pliers and the painful lesson about the importance of mold release. What starts as a simple stuck part escalates into broken glass, flying tools and a periwinkle-colored bruise to match the parts being produced. It’s exactly the kind of “learning moment” that seasoned moldmaking pros smile and nod at while silently thinking, “Been there.”
This column isn’t just about sharing laughs. It’s about recognizing that moldmaking excellence comes through perseverance, problem-solving and occasionally learning things the hard way. It’s about celebrating the ingenuity, determination and camaraderie that make our community special, even when — especially when — things don’t go according to plan.
Now, we want to hear from YOU. What’s your unforgettable moment from the shop floor? The mishap that taught you an invaluable lesson? The crazy situation that still has co-workers talking?
Submit your story here —it might just be featured in an upcoming issue.
Share your tales from the trenches. After all, we’re in this together, one moldmaking adventure at a time.
