Allied Machine and Engineering, a manufacturer of holemaking and finishing cutting tools for the metal-cutting industry, highlights the T-A Pro high penetration drilling system. With a diameter range of 0.3739-1.8820" inches (9.50– 47.80 mm), the T-A Pro is said to offer the consistency of a spade drill with the penetration rates of a high-performance drill.

The T-A Pro cutting tool solution is well suited for mold builders to achieve extended tool life with high penetration rates, especially in situations where the balance of chip formation at high penetration rates is critical. The drill’s high-speed steel, X, geometry insert not only provides good chip formation but also withstands the interruptions which are common within the cross holes of molds. Pairing the drill with special guided T-A holders can aid in maintaining hole straightness throughout the cut. The carbide guides on the holder are an extension of the margins on the insert, providing straightness and stability.

Creating a 90-degree bend at the cross holes is often resolved by grinding custom forms into high-speed steel twist drills. However, with Allied Machine’s replaceable ball nose T-A insert, mold builders have a secondary forming option for the bottom of holes to create a 90-degree bend at the intersection point. The company says these solutions demonstrate that what was formerly known as a general-purpose tool is now a go-to tool for holemaking applications.
