Walter has expanded its product range of the Drion·tec D-Spade D5142 double-sided exchangeable tip drill with the addition of diameters from 26.00 to 31.75 mm (1.02 to 1.25 in.). The diameter range is now from 12 to 31.75 mm (0.47 to 1.25 in). In addition, the tool body can drill holes to a depth of 8 times the diameter (Dc), as well as the previous capability of drilling depths of 3 and 5 times Dc.

The symmetrical Drion·tec D-Space design has two cutting edges per the DS42 exchangeable tip; therefore, users get twice as many cutting edges compared to the conventional single-point drill designs. This design helps reduce the cost per cutting edge to provide significant cost savings.

The replaceable tip drill features six cooling channels, or three coolant outlets per side — on the main cutting edge, chisel edge and circumference — to maximize cooling and extend tool life.

The drill has a self-centering tip geometry, eliminating the need for pilot drilling. Ground and polished flutes provide fast and safe chip evacuation. The tip has four straight margins for imparting fine surface finishes.

The drill’s replaceable tip is made of the WPP25 grade, which has a fine-grain substrate and an aluminum titanium nitride (AlTiN) coating deposited via high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) technology to offer a high level of wear resistance. The gold-colored top layer provides the best wear detection.

The primary application is drilling steel (ISO P material group), and the secondary application is drilling cast iron (ISO K material group). The tool is suitable for drilling blind and through holes from solid and stack (laminate), drilling. Holemaking is possible with an inclined entry angle of less than or equal to 10 degrees and an included exit of less than or equal to 20 degrees.
