The moldmaking industry is changing as younger workers enter the field with fresh energy and openness to new approaches. While finding skilled talent remains difficult, many North American shops are seeing professionals under 30 become valuable team members across engineering, production, marketing and management.

These emerging professionals combine technical skills with good communication and teamwork. Many started without prior experience but showed they could learn quickly. They're helping shops adopt automation, use new software and improve processes while maintaining necessary quality standards. Importantly, they're also guiding others into the trade through mentoring, school partnerships and sharing information about career paths.

What links these individuals is their interest in moldmaking and desire to contribute beyond their assigned responsibilities. Whether they entered through formal education or with no experience, they all view learning as ongoing. They regularly take on extra responsibilities, volunteer for improvement projects and help train colleagues. Many participate in community outreach, introducing manufacturing careers to others.

They regularly adopt new technologies, help implement business systems, improve quality processes and develop social media presence. Within their companies, they often promote modernization and help different departments work together effectively.

The industry includes various roles: technical positions like EDM specialists and CNC machinists; operational roles such as department leads and operations managers; and support positions, including automation engineers and project managers.

Some have taken less traditional routes: one co-owns a growing mold business, another combines industry knowledge with marketing skills and one advanced from administrative work to leadership through training programs. This variety shows how moldmaking now combines technical work with communication, business strategy and industry advocacy.

Experience levels differ significantly. Some began in high school programs and advanced through apprenticeships, while others entered directly after college. Some have less than two years in the field but show quick progress, while others have worked nearly 10 years despite their youth.

Several who started without moldmaking experience have advanced quickly because of their adaptability and willingness to take on challenges, particularly those who switched from unrelated industries.

The new generation in moldmaking comes from diverse backgrounds and holds various roles but shares common traits: good work habits, adaptability and a desire to improve. They represent both individual achievement and the changing nature of today's moldmaking profession.

The following profiles highlight just a few of these young professionals making a difference in the industry today.

Zero Tolerance LLC (Clinton Township, MI)

Murphy Forsyth, General Manager, Injection Molding

Murphy Forsyth joined Zero Tolerance in 2016 as part-time administrative help with no prior industry knowledge. Her willingness to learn and ownership of projects immediately set her apart.

When Zero Tolerance expanded into social media, Murphy took the lead while simultaneously learning about molds and moldmaking. When the company decided to add a new molding press, Murphy stepped up to the challenge of leading the molding department. After initial training on the new Robo Shot Press, she quickly mastered running production while continuing to help grow the company's social media presence, which led to significant industry recognition, including a shop tour from Practical Machinist and the creation of an educational EDM video series.

Murphy has a remarkable ability to connect with young people, developing strong relationships with local high schools. These partnerships have resulted in job shadowing opportunities, facility tours on Manufacturers Day, and collaborations on senior projects. This year marked the first time seniors built their own plastic injection molds and manufactured parts — a direct result of Murphy's community outreach.

She trains and mentors students and new employees in press operations, teaching them everything from setting molds to proper shutdown procedures. Murphy's impact extends beyond Zero Tolerance's walls, making her a true rock star committed to growing both the company and its community presence.

Molded Precision Components (Ontario, Canada)

Sebastian McLearon, Tooling Manager

Sebastian McLearon's rapid rise to Tooling Manager at Molded Precision Components (MPC) within just 1.5 years showcases his remarkable talent, drive and leadership in moldmaking. Despite his brief tenure, Sebastian has earned tremendous respect from colleagues and senior management through his exceptional work ethic, deep understanding of moldmaking processes and natural ability to lead others.

In the past year, Sebastian has significantly advanced MPC's operational efficiency by optimizing the tool room's workflow. After extensive research into ERP systems, he selected ProShop, a cutting-edge solution tailored to moldmaking's unique needs. Sebastian has actively led the implementation process, ensuring seamless integration while collaborating across departments to maximize its potential — demonstrating his forward-thinking approach and commitment to improving productivity and competitiveness.

Sebastian's success stems from his integrity and relentless pursuit of excellence. He consistently delivers top-quality results while fostering a culture of trust and accountability. His attention to detail and commitment to doing jobs right the first time have earned him a reputation as a dependable leader who inspires confidence in those around him.

At just 28 years old, Sebastian embodies innovation by constantly seeking new ways to push moldmaking boundaries. His research into ERP systems and proactive approach to streamlining processes reflect his ability to identify challenges and implement cutting-edge solutions. Equally important is his collaborative nature, working closely with team members across MPC, valuing their input and ensuring everyone feels part of the company's continued evolution.

Accede Mold & Tool Co. Inc. (Rochester, NY)

Brendon Davis, EDM Operator

 

Brendon Davis is a valued member of Accede Mold & Tool’s EDM team and a rising young professional and leader in the moldmaking industry. Over the past six years, Brendon has steadily grown into a key contributor who brings a technology-driven, solutions-oriented mindset that complements the deep expertise within Accede’s seasoned team.

Brendon quickly became proficient across Accede’s sinker EDM operations and inspection and took on a lead role in managing and optimizing the company’s Erowa EDM Robot Cell, which supports multiple Makino EDAF machines. His responsibilities include programming, inspection and machining of critical components that are essential to Accede’s precision and quality.

Brendon is committed to continuous improvement, but what truly sets him apart is his fresh perspective, natural embrace of technology and forward-thinking approach to innovation. He consistently brings forward ideas for increasing efficiency, improving processes and streamlining workflows—not just within EDM. Brendon has competencies in grinding and mold fit and assembly. He has also been flexible across operations to support team priorities, adjusting his schedule to meet shifting demands

Brendon’s curiosity, adaptability and collaborative approach position him well for continued growth. He is respected as a team player who shares ideas in a way that strengthens the group, values the knowledge of his experienced colleagues and helps foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Jimmy Renallo, President

Jimmy Renallo, with Creative Technology Corp since early 2021, has rapidly risen to become the company's president. He brings a passionate commitment to inspiring the next generation of manufacturing professionals, particularly focusing on supporting American manufacturers through the development of impactful technical and marketing materials for the plastics, mold and die industries.

Jimmy leverages his extensive marketing expertise to help clients strengthen their brand image and attract skilled workers — a critical challenge in today's manufacturing landscape. His unique perspective enables clients to effectively engage with younger generations and cultivate a positive industry perception that appeals to emerging talent.

Westminster Tool (Plainfield, CT)

Jonathan Varga, Manufacturing Engineer

Jon Varga is 24 years old, highly skilled in moldmaking knowledge, business-savvy and relentlessly driven. A graduate of Harvard H. Ellis Technical High School’s Precision Machining Technology program and a double major in Manufacturing Engineering and Business Management from UCONN, Jon brings hands-on manufacturing expertise and strategic insight to every project he touches.

His journey in manufacturing began at 16 when he joined Westminster Tool through the Connecticut Work-Based Learning program. While attending high school, he started his part-time training in CNC milling, then precision turning and eventually took on engineering responsibilities while pursuing his degrees at UCONN. Since then, he’s trained in over 15 technical operations spanning design, engineering, CNC machining, toolmaking, inspection, sales and project management.

Using this experience, he supports the next generation of toolmakers by sitting on his high school’s Trade School Advisory Committee, providing feedback on developing manufacturing curriculum and helping with successful job placement.

What sets Jon apart is his ability to translate technical knowledge into business success. Three years ago, Westminster Tool ventured into offering new metalworking component solutions, driven by customer demand in the aerospace sector. Jon played a pivotal role in the engineering and production of these high-precision assemblies. His efforts directly contributed to scaling this initiative from $100,000 in annual revenue to an estimated $700,000 projected this year, as well as securing Westminster Tool’s status as a Tier 2 supplier for several defense OEMs.

With no prior sales experience, he is also managing two of our key accounts this year, booking and overseeing over $2.5 million of new molds and tooling business.

Sheridan Mold & Engineering (St. Francis, WI)

Gian Livado, Moldmaker

Gian Livado embodies the spirit of dedication and growth in the moldmaking industry. His remarkable journey from shop helper to skilled moldmaker at Sheridan Mold & Engineering demonstrates how natural talent combined with determination can lead to exceptional achievement in this specialized field.

In his early days, Gian approached moldmaking with nothing more than high school shop experience and a bachelor's degree from a Milwaukee college. What he lacked in technical background, he more than compensated for with his passion for hands-on work. Starting with manual machines, Gian's meticulous attention to detail immediately distinguished him, especially valuable when working with LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber) molds where precision is paramount.

Gian's technical progression has been impressive. He mastered grinding fundamentals before moving to final assembly operations, then demonstrated his growing expertise through lathe turning. His initiative and commitment to expanding his skillset led him to CNC machining centers, where for the past two years he has excelled in both programming and operation. This progression showcases his adaptability and technical aptitude, essential qualities in modern moldmaking.

What makes Gian's achievements particularly notable is his commitment to formal professional development. This fall, he will complete his state-indentured apprenticeship, marking a significant milestone in his career. Following this accomplishment, he will take on greater responsibility by contributing to LSR silicone mold designs — a critical and complex aspect of Sheridan's operations that requires both technical knowledge and creative problem-solving.

Gian's transformation from novice to skilled moldmaker in such a short timeframe speaks volumes about his exceptional work ethic and passion for the craft. The future holds tremendous promise for Sheridan Mold & Engineering with Gian's continued growth and contributions to their team.

Dynamic Tool Corporation (Menomonee Falls, WI)

Lauren Fischer, Quality Management Representative

Lauren Fischer began her career in moldmaking in 2019 when she started working in purchasing at her father's tool shop. At the same time, she was completing her MBA with a specialization in Sustainable Business. Soon after, an important opportunity arose, and Lauren's education equipped her to lead Dynamic Tool Corporation in achieving the sustainability compliance goals of our customers, ultimately earning certification through EcoVadis.

Lauren's success led her to manage the campaign for another company initiative: quality certification. As Dynamic Tool’s Quality Management Systems (QMS) Representative, she successfully guided our company to achieve ISO 9001:2015 certification and to complete our initial surveillance audit. Lauren is responsible for creating our ISO systems and procedures, and she takes a hands-on approach to engaging, supporting, and training team members.

She regularly connects with every department in the company to drive continuous improvement, ensure audit compliance, and eliminate inefficiencies. Lauren has demonstrated her capability to lead cross-functional teams in completing 5S initiatives, Make It Better (MIB) projects, process documentation, training, inventory reduction, and gathering employee feedback and suggestions.

As a member of the Dynamic Safety Committee, Lauren has not only helped establish and promote Dynamic's core values — “Excellence, Integrity, Safety and Customer Focus” — but has also taken the lead in organizing and implementing our 5S + Safety program. She regularly meets with team leaders and individual team members to maintain an active and impactful focus on organization and cleanliness, while ensuring consistent communication both within teams and across different groups.

Recently, Lauren launched a company suggestion box to encourage employees to share their ideas for improving processes, enhancing safety practices or making any other positive contributions to our team and business. She also oversees the planning and organization of employee events, as well as managing our corporate apparel.

Lauren recognizes the importance of company culture and is committed to continuous improvement. She empowers employees at Dynamic to succeed while contributing to the company's growth. Passionate about the workforce, she actively recruits at technical schools and colleges. Additionally, she champions environmental protection and recently led a plant-wide food drive for a local pantry, showcasing her dedication to community service.

Hoffer Plastics (South Elgin, IL)

Jacob Trch, Project Engineer

Jacob Trch has quickly established himself as an invaluable asset at Hoffer Plastics through his exceptional technical knowledge, expertise in mold design and overall project management capabilities. His comprehensive understanding of part design manufacturability and tool design has been crucial to the success of numerous automotive and consumer industrial projects under his management.

Jacob's clear communication and ability to set realistic expectations have earned him high levels of trust and respect from both teammates and customers. This has resulted in projects consistently meeting or exceeding timeline expectations due to his meticulous attention to detail and dedication. His commitment to knowledge-sharing and innovation makes him a standout young leader in the field.

Colleagues describe Jacob as one of the most driven young professionals they've worked with in decades. His well-rounded knowledge of the injection molding industry enables him to manage all aspects of a project with professionalism and grace typically associated with more seasoned engineers. From initial customer discussions and creation of DFMs through tool design, part inspection and PPAP approval, Jacob consistently demonstrates his ability to bring new products to production.

With experience spanning automotive, medical, industrial components and consumer products, Jacob has been involved in virtually every phase of product development during his young career. Beyond his technical prowess, he is genuinely passionate about the industry and devoted to his family, hoping to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in plastics. His talent, energetic spirit and problem-solving abilities make him exactly the type of individual the industry needs to grow and thrive.

 

Molded Precision Components (Ontario, Canada)

Graham Donaldson, CNC Lead Hand

Graham Donaldson, recently promoted to CNC Lead Hand at Molded Precision Components (MPC), exemplifies the next generation of excellence in moldmaking. His exceptional contributions to MPC's CNC operations and clear potential as an industry leader are evident in his rapid career advancement. His unique blend of technical skill, creativity and leadership makes him stand out among his peers.

In his role, Graham has demonstrated impressive range and expertise. He designs electrodes — a critical aspect of efficient mold manufacturing —ensuring his designs meet both precision and production requirements. His ability to create high-quality, custom electrodes demonstrates his deep understanding of both technical and aesthetic aspects of CNC machining, supporting MPC's quality standards while reflecting his dedication to perfecting his craft.

Graham's expertise in programming high-speed milling machines has proven invaluable. His programming skills enable machines to operate at peak performance, resulting in faster production cycles and higher-quality finishes. This directly contributes to MPC's ability to meet tight schedules and exceed client expectations. Beyond technical expertise, Graham continuously explores new ways to enhance productivity and precision, whether by streamlining processes, adopting new programming techniques or leveraging advanced tools and materials.

His promotion to CNC Lead Hand highlights his leadership abilities. In this role, he mentors less experienced team members and fosters a collaborative, high-performance culture within the department. What makes Graham's achievements even more remarkable is that he's been in the trade for less than four years, demonstrating extraordinary aptitude and commitment. The future is exceptionally bright for MPC with Graham leading the CNC team.

NextGen Mold Technologies (Windsor, Ontario, Canada)

Ryan Kennette, Moldmaking Leader

At just 25 years old, Ryan Kennette has proven himself to be an indispensable leader and rising star in the moldmaking industry. As a key figure at NextGen Mold Technologies since its inception, Ryan has played a major role in the company's rapid growth, setting a powerful example of technical excellence, leadership and commitment to quality.

From the beginning, Ryan demonstrated the traits that set him apart: relentless work ethic, passion for the trade and an unwavering focus on mentoring others. His long hours, hands-on leadership and dedication to continuous improvement have helped NextGen become one of the fastest-growing moldmakers in the industry.

What distinguishes Ryan is not just his technical ability, but his impact on people. Fey Industries (Edgerton, MN)

Carter Loosbrock, Automation/Maintenance Technician

At just one year with the company, Carter Loosbrock has become a valuable team member at Fey Industries. As an automation and maintenance technician, he has shown a strong commitment to improving production processes and developing his technical skills.

From the beginning, Carter has demonstrated key strengths: a willingness to learn, an ability to troubleshoot and a proactive approach to problem-solving. His technical abilities shine through his capacity to design and machine custom parts. Most notably, he has significantly improved cycle times in the screwdriver department, earning recognition from his colleagues.

What sets Carter apart is his eagerness to grow professionally. He has already been nominated for and won three company awards – “Do The Right Thing,” “All In” and “Make It Uniquely Better And Simplified” – which are voted on by his fellow employees. This recognition speaks to the respect he has quickly earned within the team.

Carter is currently preparing to expand his skills further. While he has been focused on improving production machines, he is set to learn CNC mill programming and mold troubleshooting this summer. His managers see potential in his ability to learn and contribute to the company's technical operations.

As Carter continues to develop his skills, he represents the kind of motivated young technician that companies value. His first year at Fey Industries has already demonstrated his potential to be a meaningful contributor to the team's success.

Industrial Molds (Rockford, IL)

Sasha Stojanovic, Engineering Manager

Sasha Stojanovic has proven himself worthy of recognition following his promotion to Engineering Manager at Industrial Molds. While previously nominated, his recent contributions make him even more deserving of this honor.

Sasha excels as a mentor, dedicating considerable time to training incoming engineers who fit the company culture, but typically have limited knowledge about tool design. He patiently handles questions from both the operations floor and his engineering staff, understanding that his role is integral to product success. Sasha approaches his responsibilities with precision and timeliness, consistently attributing achievements to his team rather than taking personal credit.

His commitment to team development is evident in his investment in training materials that educate and empower his engineering staff. Sasha maintains an open-door policy that fosters honest communication, whether in-person during work hours or via call/text after hours. This approach has positively influenced team growth and morale.

What makes Sasha's contributions even more remarkable is his ability to balance professional growth with personal milestones. He recently welcomed his second child while adapting to his new role and training a new engineer. Industrial Molds values being part of Sasha's journey as he develops both personally and professionally within the company.

Thermo Fisher Scientific (Rochester NY)

Nick Paxon, Journey Level Moldmaker

Nick Paxon has proven himself to be a standout talent in the moldmaking industry by being named the SPE Mold Technologies Division 2025 Apprentice of the Year at PTXPO in March. Nick has become an effective spokesperson for what the trade needs as we work to attract the next generation of moldmaking professionals.

Nick's path in manufacturing began at Monroe Community College's Applied Technology Center, where he maintained a 3.8 GPA while developing practical skills he applies daily in the industry. His technical capabilities include Mastercam drafting and programming, CNC milling and lathe operation, Wire EDM, Sinker EDM, cylindrical grinding, surface grinding and welding.

What sets Nick apart is his ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex mold issues. He has successfully repaired various types of molds, including Injection, EBM, ISBM and IBM molds, demonstrating his technical understanding and problem-solving approach. His experience with hot manifold troubleshooting further shows his ability to handle challenging situations effectively.

Nick brings a strong commitment to workplace safety, with training in CPR and First Aid. He contributes weekly to safety audits and housekeeping initiatives. His knowledge extends to basic hydraulic troubleshooting and the skilled use of measurement equipment, making him a versatile team member.

In his daily work, Nick takes a careful approach to every project. Whether building new molds, creating mold components, polishing steel and aluminum molds, or performing ultrasonic cleaning and sandblasting, he focuses on quality and attention to detail. This dedication has improved finished products and influenced those working with him.

Nick has also shown leadership qualities by mentoring newer apprentices and sharing knowledge with peers. His efforts to create a supportive learning environment have strengthened his team and workplace.

As Nick completed his journey to become a New York State journeyman on January 30, 2025, he represents the kind of professional the moldmaking industry needs – technically skilled, collaborative, and committed to excellence. His recognition as Apprentice of the Year acknowledges both his current contributions and his potential for future impact in the field.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (Lewiston, ID)

Ty Johannesen, Craftsman 1

Ty Johannesen's journey into moldmaking began about five years ago when he stood out at a Lewiston High School science fair, demonstrating exceptional attention to detail and strong interest in mechanical design and 3D printing. Soon after, he began volunteering after school to start a 3D printing program for pre-engineering students, showcasing his aptitude as a high-level achiever and mentor even before graduating.

As Ty progressed through high school, he contemplated his career path, torn between mechanical engineering and machining. Rather than choosing, he pursued both through an associate's program at the local CTE school (LCSC). His combined interest in engineering and machining made him the perfect candidate for moldmaking. When the opportunity arose to hire a mold maker intern/apprentice, Ty was the first choice, officially beginning his mold making career at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories in January 2023.

Since joining the company, Ty has rapidly gained experience in numerous moldmaking skills, including EDM, WEDM, VMC and HMC milling, heat treating, metal hybrid 3D printing, surface grinding and programming. Working alongside seasoned moldmakers and tool designers from various disciplines and backgrounds, he has consistently earned high praise for his performance and dedication.

In January 2025, Ty accepted an offer as a Craftsman 1, the entry-level moldmaker position at Schweitzer. When asked about his career choice, Ty states he can't imagine doing anything else and is looking forward to building molds in the future, demonstrating a passion that promises a bright future in the industry.

Integrity Tool & Mold Inc. (Ontario, Canada)

Jake Peddie, Moldmaking Leader

Jake Peddie began working at Integrity Tool & Mold Inc. when he was 16 years old as an apprentice through his high school program. Having limited experience in the industry, he relied on bits and pieces of knowledge he had gathered over the years from his father, who is a senior-level CNC programmer and machinist. For two years, Jake trained alongside other moldmaking apprentices in a preparatory group before moving to a new build team, where he received mentorship from several senior-level moldmakers.

This mentorship enabled Jake to rapidly develop his skills and industry knowledge over just five years. Now, at 21 years old, he is the youngest Team Leader at Integrity, leading a team of seven toolmakers. In his role, Jake manages the progression and timing of all tools assigned to his team and ensures that all finished products meet the highest quality standards.

Three of the moldmakers on Jake’s team are under the age of 30 and are emerging talents in the trade. As their leader, Jake provides daily mentorship and technical training, significantly influencing the future of our workforce and the tool and mold industry. Under his guidance, his team skillfully manages 12% of Integrity’s new tool builds.

Jake is dedicated to his trade and actively contributes to the community. He participates in Integrity's recruitment efforts and frequently visits local high schools to promote careers in the skilled trades. Jake connects well with young people, demonstrating that success at a young age is achievable. His own career progression serves as an example of how quickly one can advance through hard work, dedication and a willingness to learn.

Jake exemplifies Integrity’s core values of teamwork, a positive attitude and a strong work ethic. He is innovative, forward-thinking and dedicated to achieving operational excellence at all levels.
